THE SUMMER SERIES OF ASSIGNMENTS
Thoughtfully read your first assigned chapter (it's different for each of you... see above). They're super short. If you find yourself resorting to online summaries instead of simply reading the chapter, you should reconsider signing up for IB L&L. Also, the summary is probably about the same length as the chapter anyway, so just read the chapter. I strongly encourage you to read the entire book, as it will make you a better reader of and thinker about literature.
After finishing the first chapter, record yourself on video discussing it with someone who is not one of your IB L&L classmates. Try to find someone who isn't your eight-year-old brother (he can't help it, but no). Try to find an adult or an academically successful and curious peer. This video recording is informal; however, I want to be able to see you in the video. This is to prevent you from simply reading from a script. Discuss genuinely. The video should be between 2 and 4 minutes long.
Do not simply summarize the chapter (although summarizing it efficiently for them is fine). Your discussion should include:
A summary of what your chapter covers.
Your thoughts about what you read. What surprised you? What confused you? Can you apply it to something you've read or watched before? Hint, films and series often share some techniques with literature.
Ask the person with whom you are discussing your chapter what they think? Have they seen this before in other texts or movies/shows?
After recording video of your thoughtful discussion about the chapter, attach it to the appropriate TEAMS assignment (there will be five separate assignments) and turn it in.
Repeat the process for all five of your chapters (four directly assigned and one of the three additional options).
Each of the chapter recordings should be filmed separately on different days and not always with the same person.
