Stacking the Deck

The "Stacking the Deck" fallacy is similar to the saying we've all heard (used?): "I didn't lie to you... I just didn't tell you the whole truth."

Francis Bacon described it as "counting the hits and forgetting the misses."

This fallacy occurs when information is "cherry picked" to only support the stance being given. Other information may exist that doesn't shine a 100% favorable light on the the stance being argued, but that information is not brought to light.

This is similar to confirmation bias.

Example:

Life as a peasant must've been all sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows, right?

This meme cherry-picks the one positive fact about being a peasant (not 100% confident it's actually a fact, but we'll give it to them for the sake of the argument).

It conveniently leaves out the minor problem of dying from dysentery, cholera, or tuberculosis at age 29. Childbirth was an adventure, to say the least. Who needs medicine to help sooth a toothache? Oh, and there's no need to mention that they were poor. SUPER POOR. And they had no power... neither the electricity kind nor the make a positive change in the world kind.

But, hey, they only had to work "about 150 days a year." They clearly had it better than you do.

Example:

Summer is the best season because it's warm, birds sing, baby animals are born, everything is green, food can be cooked on the grill, windows can be opened, shoes don't need to be worn, short shorts can be worn, bicycles can be ridden, etc.

Notice how I left out sunburn, bugs, road construction, blazing heat waves, etc.?

Is this avoidance fair to the debate?

Example:

Wisconsin is the best state because it has the nicest people.

It is true that most people from Wisconsin are extremely, even painfully nice. However, I'm knowingly ignoring the fact that Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer, two of our country's most notorious serial killers, are also from Wisconsin.

Example:

Pepsi, Pepsi everywhere!

Pepsi!

Happy Pepsi. Dancing Pepsi.

So much amazing Pepsi!

Pepsi flows like water!

Ahh! So refreshing!
