The Fallacy of Division

The Division Fallacy is a Fallacy of Ambiguity is essentially the opposite of the Composition Fallacy; however, the Division Fallacy occurs with the faulty assumption that, because an entity has a particular characteristic, that entity's parts also share this characteristic:

Example: The United States is a wealthy country; therefore, every person in the U.S.A. is wealthy, too.

The United States has lots of homeless people.

Example: When full, Mr. Spagnolo's backpack is extremely heavy; therefore, each item in his backpack must be heavy, too.

Mr. Spagnolo has lots of "ultra-light" items in his backpack. A backpack can be filled with 40 pounds of feathers or 40 pounds of bricks... either way, it still weighs 40 pounds + the weight of the pack itself.

Example: Bob can be seen with the naked eye. Bob is made up of atoms. Therefore atoms can be seen with the naked eye.

Even with fantastic vision, you cannot see an atom with the naked eye.
